What is Restore Scar Therapy?
Restore Therapy is a leading specialist education provider with a global team of tutors. Our courses teach therapy and exercise professionals skills and knowledge to support recovery after traumatic injury or surgery create scar tissue.
The key concepts and methodology:
- Avoid excessive inflammation with mild to moderate pressure, load and stretch. Research shows that inflammation can cause scar tissue to form. Inflammation is linked to development and progression of keloid and hypertrophic scars. After some surgeries or injuries, it can increase the risk of lymphoedema and axillary web syndrome (cording).
- Promote healthy the skin and fascia. Research shows that scars can often become stiffer than pre-injury tissue and become stuck (or adhered). Our Restore Therapy method encourages mobility between the layers of tissue with gliding and stretch. Scar massage can help improve tissue health and reduce common symptoms.
- Treat sensitivity and neural function/disfunction: using different stimulus (light, deep and vibrational massage techniques) on the skin can promote sensory rehabilitation and restoration of nerve function. These stimulus are often used in hand therapy and stroke rehabilitation with good clinical results.
- Promote circulation and lymphatic drainage: using specific manual stimulations to increase superficial blood supply and localised lymph flow. This improves soft tissue health, and, if the scar is limiting lymphatic flow, therapy may support post-surgical lymphoedema management.

Scar Therapy Practitioner
Scar Therapy Practitioners have general skills and they can treat any surgery and/or trauma injury. They are trained to use scar massage and stretch. Silicone cupping is also included to provide negative pressure (lift) your scar - or they may use a medical device for negative pressure such as LymphaTouch or 6D Clinical Action Pro. They are also trained to use intraoral techniques for facial trauma or to help after cosmetic facial surgery.
Oncology Scar Specialist
Oncology Scar Specialists are trained to support recovery following cancer-related surgery. Their expertise extends beyond the surgical scar, addressing the wider effects of treatment on the surrounding tissues and movement. They can help with restricted mobility, cording (also known as Axillary Web Syndrome), radiotherapy-induced fibrosis, and internal scar tissue restrictions. Their training also includes important considerations for individuals living with stomas, lymphoedema, and the common physical challenges that can arise following cancer treatment and surgery.
Caesarean Scar Specialist
Caesarean Scar Specialists have completed dedicated training in postnatal scar therapy, scar tissue treatment, and abdominal massage techniques. They are skilled in supporting recovery following a caesarean birth through assessment and treatment of the scar and surrounding tissues. Their training also includes assessment for abdominal muscle separation (diastasis recti), enabling them to provide appropriate advice and hands-on support to aid recovery, improve comfort, and help restore function and mobility.
