Kirsten Atkinson
Kirsten Atkinson – Soft Tissue Therapist
Offering tailored treatments in Remedial Massage, Sports Massage, Swedish Massage, Pregnancy Massage, C-Section Scar Specialist and APPI Pilates Instructor.
My aim, through using techniques including massage, soft tissue release and trigger point therapy, is to help clients unwind, maintain positive wellbeing and achieve pain-free movement whenever possible. Whether you are in need of complete relaxation, are a sports person or in pain, we can work together on a treatment plan to get you feeling more ‘You’ again.
After graduating with a BSc (Hons) in Physiology and Sports Science from Glasgow University, I went on to complete an MSc (Med Sci) in Human Nutrition and Public Health also from Glasgow University. I then began working life in the NHS as a Clinical Physiologist in Respiratory Medicine at The Royal Infirmary in Glasgow. This involved carrying out lung function testing for the assessment and diagnosis of various lung diseases such as asthma, COPD, emphysema and pulmonary fibrosis. After 4 years in the NHS I went on to qualify and work as a Biology Teacher working in inner city schools and latterly schools in more rural communities. Life as a busy working mum of two young children led me to take a short career break to focus on a more balanced family life. In 2017 my enthusiasm for Anatomy and Physiology combined with a passion for wellbeing led to me furthering my studies and I qualified with a Diploma in Remedial and Sports Massage Therapy from the University-accredited Western School of Massage. I established Fjӓll Remedial and Sports Massage Therapy in 2017, offering soft tissue therapy to help ease the symptoms of various muscular aches and pains. The pandemic in 2020/21 forced me to close my business for a number of months. Although this was an extremely challenging time for self-employed therapists such as myself I remained focussed and determined to return armed with more knowledge and skills to bring to my clients. I studied Self Myofascial Release and was able to bring this therapy to clients ‘ virtually’ during lockdown. I have recently qualified as an APPI Pilates instructor with the Australian Physiotherapy and Pilates Institute. This allows me to bring movement treatment alongside my soft tissue therapy with the two modalities complimenting each other well to give the best outcomes for clients. Most recently, I have qualified as a C-Section Scar Specialist. This has provided me with advanced massage skills for scar tissue and the abdominal area to support clients after caesarean birth.
On a more personal level, I am a busy mum of two active and sporty children! I am often found ‘track side’ with a spanner in my hand supporting my son at various track and road cycling races across the UK or up to my knees in mud supporting my daughter at her horse riding. When I get a second to myself, I enjoy Pilates, country walks with my fox red Labrador and of course, a nice relaxing massage.
