Itchy scars can cause discomfort and distress, but there are ways to stop your scar itching. Our friends at BUGS – Burns Unit Group Support, recently shared some simple ways to help reduce the itch:
1) Keep your scar clean and moisturised
Scars should be kept clean as dirt may irritate it and cause infection. Moisturising your scar with a good quality, non-perfumed scar cream will also help to reduce the itchiness; we love this one from UK-based ScarWand and highly rate ScarBan and Alhydran scar creams and gels.

2) Keep your scar cream in the fridge
Cool and soothe your itchy scar by keeping your cream or gel in the fridge.
3) Avoid scratching and cut your nails
Scratching causes the skin to break down, cut your nails and wear soft cotton gloves to bed if you’re scratching in your sleep.
4) Bathe the area in cool water
Try bathing the area in cool water or apply a cool flannel.
5) Apply pressure to the area
Gentle compression can be helpful to reduce itching. Speak to your scar therapist about suitable compression dressings or garments.
6) Wash pressure garments carefully
Wash pressure garments carefully and rinse thoroughly. Avoid strong detergents. If possible, use a gentle, non-perfumed, non-biological washing powder/liquid.
7) Wear loose cotton clothing
Try not to wear anything that will rub on your scar and wear breathable fabrics like cotton.
8) Try cotton bedding
Cotton bedding feels cooler than polyester or wool bedding and can help reduce itching at night.
